Space station designs are frequently put forth as circular so they could "spin" to simulate gravity.


But, the station is in the vacuum of space. If spinning is enough to simulate gravity, then why not just spin the center section rather than the whole space station. What difference does it make if the bulk is moving around the center or the center is moving while the bulk stays put? It's the same relative movement. I understand that there are minor effects from the planet that the station orbits, but that effect can be minimized by simply putting the station in a higher orbit.

Osmium (pronounced /ˈɒzmiəm/, OZ-mee-əm) is a chemical element that has the symbol Os and atomic number 76. Osmium is a hard, brittle, blue-gray or blue-black transition metal in the platinum family, and is the densest natural element.


So my invention is an oil drum sized mass of Osmium wrapped in copper wire and placed as the core of an electric motor in the center of a space station. The osmium should be put through a series of hydraulic presses before being placed in the container in order to maximize it's density. The mass of this drum spinning at high speeds should simulate the relative movement of the whole space station spinning and create an artificial gravity field.

I saw this invention in a dream, many, many years ago. I think it should work in theory, but I'm not really a physicist. So, I'm totally willing to accept that I am utterly wrong because of my lack of knowledge about quantum physics.
