He's naive because the writer is unaware of the true facts concerning the nature of outer space. It's not his fault, just like people the 19th century and earlier weren't dumb for not realizing that microorganisms existed. Like germs causing diseases, they simply did not have the ability to know things like that. I would define that as naive, but I would not equate that with stupidity. It's not their fault they did not know.
