Thread: Rome: Empire or Republic?

  1. #1

    Default Rome: Empire or Republic?

You all know about it. Now it's your time to decide - should Rome have stayed a Republic, or should have it taken the course it did and become a Empire?
In essence, what I'm asking is which Roman government would have lasted longer? Give valid facts, and please state your answers with intelligence. I don't want any moronic posts in a valid, intelligent and healthy debate.

Edit: I'm looking for long, lengthy posts filled to the brim with intelligence. Kinda like a Conrad post. Lol.

I would say the republic was more successful.
Sure the empire owned more territory, but the republic seems to have contributed more to culture and the quality of life of it's citizens.

I agree with Rota. Under the Republic, they had TWO leaders, not one. They were often enemies, so their choices was made for the both classes of the society. And during the Republic did you have to be a 42 year old man, with atleast 5 millions of gold, and have political ensureance to become a council.

It was neccessary for Rome to shift from a Republic to an Empire because of the military challenges it was facing at the time. The Emporer had complete autonomy from the Senate in matters military outside the city-state of Rome itself, which made it possible to react quickly to matters as they arose. If Rome had stayed a Republic the territory that they had gained would have been at risk and further expansion may not have been possible as important matters would have become bogged down in debate in the Senate.

The Shift to Emporer might not have happened without the charismatic leader Julius Ceasar who pretty much forced the Senate to name him as Emporer because of the support he had in the population. A lesser man would not have been able to bring about such a radical change.

In the long run the shift may have been a major factor in the decline of the Roman Empire but in the shorter term it was the major factor in making Rome the super power of it's time.

are you trying to get us to do your homework essay or something. lol
Love is stronger then death, even though it cant stop death from happening
But no matter how hard it tries, it can't stop people from loving each other, it can't take away those memories
In the end, life is stronger then death. But how much it hurts...

    Apparently that was funny.

I believe the Empire was actually the most productive state of Rome to this day. Julius Caesar was the JFK of his time, incredibly charismatic and charming. He was also a brilliant military leader, and his works probably served the people for more than himself.

Might I direct you to a thread I made a while back?

It's really just a different wording of the same question, as the better government is generally the one that lasts longer.
