Well this is my biased and semi-relgious opinion. If rome hadn't become and empire, most of europe would have became Islamic. Italy today is very relgious. A strong Roman Catholic society. If they hadn't expanded and created the Byzantine Empire, Italy today would be Islamic. Spain and France would be overrun by the Moors. Turkey would control Greece, Macedonia and maybe Italy it'self.
