Don't forget the level of your beacon tower has an effect on your scout reports: The higher the level of your beacon tower, the better your scout reports.

For example: with level 5 informatics and a level 2 beacon tower, I scouted a level 6 valley, and got no information. I upgraded the beacon tower to level 3, and scouted again, and got the "zounds" report.
