And by 'war', I mean offensive war, because otherwise absolutely everyone would bring up WWII.
So, is there ever a justifiable reason to attack a country, other than that its military forces have struck at yours?

Do you ever, EVER attempt to proofread your idiotic thoughts before you spew them at everyone within range? How about you go and read the thread title again, then create a serious answer?
THe only reason to go to war is to make money(resources for your self)
IT's like Pirates and the longer a life of a pirate with out gold or booty or rum the meaner and more daring they get and look for bigger risks vs. reward pay offs, there was a time (The sage Kings Area) When wars were fought with Honor and grace but, some people came along and said thats stupid and put an end to it, I even heard a President say once "Well If Caesar crossed the rubicon to help his empire we'll cross any nations border to do the same", hmm THus always to Tyrants comes to mind.
Oh Wait to Answer your Question NO
THere will never be a good reason to go to war just Ignorance and Selfishness Until humanity learns to function with out it.![]()
How about you **** and realize what i posted.
I actually didnt try to troll or derail the thread.
I gave several reasons from the standpoints of the country doing the attacking.
Nationalism~America threatened countries to **** out America at times
Imperialism~people fight to get the best territories
Bored~probably the only one that can be considered idiotic
Resources~what you call the colonization of Africa?
To fight the good fight~Sparta
to fix a slight on you or country~Alexander the Great
Just because i didnt elaborate on my suggestions doesnt mean they are idiotic.
you really should not flame anyone just because they arent perfect or meeting your standards.

Heh... riiiiiiiight. Sure you didn't.
Yes, you did list a bunch of reasons that countries go to war. However, NONE of them are morally justifiable. Perhaps you didn't elaborate because you realized that, below the first, tiny layer of sense, there's just a whole lot of BS?
you wanted to know if war was justifiable, i gave you some points from the standpoints of the attacker, not the observer. Of course its all bs, but countries still use those excuses to wage a war. Maybe you should be a bit more specific in that you want us to take the standpoint of the observer, as a historian, nothing else.

So now that my little friend has listed most of the bad reasons to make war on another country, perhaps we should think about this seriously.
Perhaps the only good reason to start a war against another country is to implement a regime change but only under certain circumstances. The circumstances I am thinking of is those rare occasions where the current regime is slaughtering large numbers of it's own population due to racial, religious or philosophical motivation or simply because the country is in the control of a mad tyrant who rules through terror.
Some instances of this in recent times are Pol Pott in Cambodia and perhaps Saddam Hussein in Iraq. Even then it is a risky business as removing a ruling group can create a power vacuum that may be filled by another group that may also be seen as undesirable, or, as in the case of Iraq, could create an ongoing conflict that turns the liberators into an occupying army, which then loses popular support in the country that you were trying to help.
Real war is a risky business and the consequences are severe if there is a poor outcome. Sorry to mention WWII but in that case, even a successful outcome cost the victors so much that Great Britain was still rationing food 10 years after the war was over. Making war, even for the best of motives has to be a last resort, after all other options have been exhausted. We live in a global community now. The age of empire building is long gone.
PEACE
The only time a war would be justifiable, besides being attacked and going on D, would probably be a threat trowards one country.
Lets say country A has some kind of powerful weaponry, and issues threats to use on country B if they do not follow commands issued by A.
In my opinion that would be a justifiable reason for Country b to go to war with Country A.
(A and B only used to not start some kind of conspiracy...)
It might be for the defense of ones country., but it's still taking the offensive.
