FF got a lot of their stuff from DnD. However, I think they asked for permission, so if DnD ever decides to go into lawsuit mode, all RPG companies are screwed 'cept Square Enix.

On the contrary, you are both wrong.

Honestly, why do people think that every critter that appears in a video game has to have been created by that game?

The oldest reference to Tiamat is mythological, referring to her as "The Brood-Mother" within some of those. In some references, she's a demon, in others, simply a twisted creature. But in almost all, she is a fearsome winged creature that (in some) has a brood of smaller, less powerful creatures which assist her.

Hence the name "Brood Mother". The name also appeared in StarCraft, while I'm on the topic, in reference to one of the Zerg Broods, the Tiamat Brood. Tiamat also appeared in Darksiders, as a demon, and was even then "The Brood Mother".

So, its ancient, and therefore, it is up for free grabs. I could write a story right now and wouldn't have to pay anyone a dime.

As a matter of fact, the original is Babylonian I believe, but I may be wrong.

I never said that. I was just replying directly to Kite. Unless of course, you took my post the wrong way. Let me clarify, the first GAME that Tiamat ever appeared in was DnD.

I thought the original Tiamat was Egyptian, but I could be mistaken.
