And I get what you're saying about Metallica and Slipknot Outlaw, but I think most people can like the music without really getting to know some of the classics.

They separate old and new metal, heavy and regular, etc. Mainstream bands like Metallica and Slipknot are easily accessible, you have to have a real love for the art of Metal music to appreciate people like Dimebag, Steve Vai, or Broderick (though lets face it I love Megadeth but people are starting to make them more mainstream, eh?).
Yes... It takes a while for some people to get used to the heavy sound, but once they're used to it, they can hear the beauty of it.

Personally, I'm usually more in Black/Death, but there's some good Power Metal bands out there, as well as the obvious classic Heavy Metal bands.

Been on a serious Manowar kick lately, and if you guys haven't heard about Charred Walls of the Damned, check 'em out sometime.

    Default Thats not metal!

    Slipknot, Metallica???

    THATS NOT METAL!

    It is all about the:
    Whitechapel \m/
    Insomnium \m/
    Gojira \m/
    Bohemoth \m/
    Amon Amarth \m/
    Cannable Corpse \m/
    Cattle Decapitation \m/
    Lamb of God \m/
    Nile \m/

Most full on metalheads will listen to this kind of stuff, or atleast this is the kind of thing I am in to. I am not saying that Metallica & Slipknot are bad, I think Metallica are very good, but that is the kind of metal that us metalheads are weaned on in school.

As for genres; I could go on for pages and pages and talk about all the different genres and cross over genres there are, Blackend Death Metal for example, and their characteristics but you would probably all get rather bored. It doesn't even matter in the end, thats just how it is sold.

Check out a few of those bands and tell me what you think, maybe I can turn a few of you over to the dark side...

Well, there's two good band there. Behemoth and Amon Amarth are fantastic. If you want Swedish Melodic Death, Amon Amarth is the way to go. Behemoth is good if you want some Blackened Death. Cannibal Corpse is the epitome of "br00tuhl metuhllz, bro" stuff that 13-year-old kids listen to to try to make themselves seem like tough guys, but as they grow up, they realize that there's so much better stuff out there (I'm sad to say I'm speaking from experience). Anata, for example, puts Cannibal Corpse to shame in every aspect of the music, be it instrumentally, vocally, or just general musicianship. Not trying to troll or whatever blah, blah, blah.. I just take my music seriously because music is an extremely large part of my life. If you want to expand your list of bands into some of the less well-known bands, feel free to PM me. I've got a whole library full of stuff that I'd gladly share with open-minded people who are willing to expand their horizons beyond the surface of modern-day Metal.

I can't say that I agree in all your "this is metal"-choices. But I like that you got both Nile and Gojira in there, which is for me the pinnacle of metal at the moment.
But just in case you forgot I'd like to mention a few great bands like Death(R.I.P.), Suffocation, The Faceless, Origin, Atheist, Opeth, At The Gates, Carcass and of course the godfathers of grind: Napalm Death

    Lamb of God.... *facepalm*

Thread fails because it has no mention of Iron Maiden and Dio ;p.

Other epic bands.. Mind you, I am a huge power metal fan.

    Hammerfall
    Helloween
    Sonata Arctica
    Stratovarius
    Cain's Offering
    Symphony X
    Versailles
    Galneryus
    Rhapsody of Fire
Early Megadeth (Don't really like their newer stuff)
    Racer X
    Paul Gilbert
    Luca Turilli
    Kamelot
    And others who I forgot.
    Quit.
