Thanks Melri, have you confirmed this in practice? Seems like it must be right based on all the exercise/evocalc stuff, so I'm going to give it a try

re:Naems - Well for my case the cav is just to keep me out of resources, and beat down loyalty, etc. Basically the city-capturing strategy, except it's my last one so they can't get it. But trying to zero me and make me quit is the aim, I guess. Or buy a teleport, lol. A catapult would be nice. Someday - but with one city, it's a looong time to archery AND metalcasting 10 hehe.

Magic:

An experienced friend told me this.. and I think it's okay to share since it's really only feasible with fairly small armies, and would be helpful pretty much only in my type of situation:

You can save your troops from the overnight attacks by marching them out overnight. Not just by camping them in a nearby valley; devious enemies might steal your valleys overnight anyway, and would notice and kill them. Also with the increased food intake, you might run out of food. (Not sure what happens then.. do they march back? Or stay there but die from hunger?)

Instead, march them to a valley and then abandon the valley. When they get there and it's not yours, they'll turn right around and come home. Even if your enemy captures it, they won't try to fight (confirmed this). So if you're going to be offline for 8 hours, use camp time so it's a 4 hour trip each way. They'll arrive home just as you get back on.

You'll need transporters to be able to do this obviously, but you'll also want extras so you can march them out with maybe 100k gold / 100k food. That way if your city is completely plundered when they return, you can immediately pray to get loyalty up to 25 and close the gates.

Having at least one warehouse is probably needed, depending on the frequency of the attacks. Also, this really one works if you're producing food - it can take quite a bit for those long marches, and the main goal is just to keep a small number of troops alive.
