And if you are truly worried about getting attacked when not online, you can make it so you can only be attacked when you are online, but that isn't cheap, and relying on 1-3 is a bit cheaper.
Actually they have made things so ridiculously in favour of the defender in Age 2 if would be pointless attacking someone in the first place

Reasons why are:

1. You can build archer towers faster than archers and you need roughly 5 archers to a tower. Troops are no longer quick to build and expendable. They are precious commodity.
2. If you are offline you have the option to autoheal so even if someone does kill a decent portion of your army you can grow them back immediately. Proper layering + auto-heal will make you almost bulletproof. I know this from experience of attacking cities with an autoheal bot running.
3. If by chance you break through a city and kill all the troops (will cost you almost 10 times the troops than the defender) you cannot capture the city. All you can do is colonise it.
4. You have to wait 8 hour to attack
5. Somebody with a hero with 400 attack is only able to build troops 80% faster than someone with a 70 attack hero.

There are other reasons but these are amongst the main ones.

You dont need to use truce agreements in Age 2. All you need to do is hit the auto-heal option. Nobody will waste their time on an auto-heal city.

Age 2 is a sad joke and will end up with nobody wanting to attack anyone else because of the expense (time-wise) to make troops. Forget the 0.0 city ever being taken. Will take 500 people throwing their entire armies at it after one year playing to get remotely close to knocking it over.
