He is talking Age 2 here, not the forever free Age 1

Forgive my ignorance but what does NPC stand for?
Am I the only person who noticed that Kurnan specifically said "workshop" and not "barracks"?

All the answers about resources are great, but I think what he's asking about is the items needed to research better armor for his heroes (as that is the only thing you can do in the workshop). Building resource fields and owning valleys alone won't get that for him.

    Kurnan:

As you go through the quests you will be rewarded for some of them (especially those related to building the inn/feast hall, hiring a hero, making him mayor, etc.) with the items you need. Usually you get enough from these quests to research all the armor items up to level 2. After that it gets trickier, as there's a specific item you need that you can only get at the shop (for money) or by having it "drop" when you attack valleys or npc's. You can also get the other items (wood/fabric/gems, etc) from these raids as well.

However, I would not worry too much about this yet. You can't use the armor until your hero reaches a minimum of level 10, and you will get some boost from him wearing it even if it hasn't been upgraded past lv 2 yet.

Just don't use the gems to make stars for now. Wait until you have researched all the armor items as high as they can go before you try to add the stars. This is because once you add a star, if you do more research on that item, it takes the star away as part of the price. So adding them too soon is just wasting the gems you used to make them.

PS - NPC is non-player city. These are the cities on the map with black flags that are not owned by anyone.

    I stand by my statement.

I know of a successful player that has not spent more than the $35. And he only did that to fill some OCD need to complete the quests. Most of the cents he bought still sit in his account balance. You can be successful in Age 2 without spending real money. You just can't be successful "quickly." It takes some more patience to advance without money.
