reminds me of a time in eve online when some rather large alliance "forced" their members to attack the stations of another alliance during the Xmas festivities, the other alliance congratulated them on depriving their kids of a nice time

I really hate when people bring personal real life issues and expect everyone to adjust their gameplay to whatever is happening in their real life.. the other player inst blurring the lines you are.
with that being said if an active player is having major real life issues and is depending on players generousity to avoid a negative impact to their game I have seen it worke d out between alliances t give a guy a free pass.
its a common courtesy which if abused can be quickly rectified in gaame.
now i apologze for your loss .. you asked this guy for a pass and he didnt give it.. your only option was to not to go to the funeral and defend your castle.
oh wait you didnt do this why?? cause rl was more important than the game. whatever your in game loss loss it was nothign to what ya really lost..
this is situation where in game you either retalite. organize against this guy
it seems your real in game issue is this guy keeps attacking you every week
To the OP:
I think I understand what you are saying here. It's not about the gameplay, it's about the attitude behind it. The other player is obviously immature, self-centered, and lacking empathy.
For my own part, I am the kind of player who would explain politely to you that this is the internet, where many lie. This is a war game, where my job is to attack and win. And I would express my sympathy on the passing of your loved one, congratulate you on your new job, and take/colonize your cities as I did so.
It's his attitude that irked you, obviously. And yes, you are right. Too many people are complete jerks these days and it would be nice to see a return to at least some level of civility.
It's not very nice.. but the whole idea of fighting wars against people, killing their troops, and ransacking their cities is not nice either. And as in real war, many people will take whatever strategic advantage they can.
It's very, very common in the game to try to discover where you enemy lives so you have an idea of their time zone and when they will be sleeping. After the early stages, going on offense is very nearly impossible when a player is online - at a minimum, the likely troop loss is not worth it. It's virtually impossible to steal a city when a player is online since they need only comfort once an hour to keep loyalty up.
So as a rule you should avoid telling any enemy or potential enemy when you will or will not be online. It's like painting a big target on your cities. If you said nothing, they might ignore you for other battles - but if they know they will have free reign to do what they can, it's really, really tempting to take advantage of it.
i knew a guy who went trew what your going trew an he kept one city after that an build just enough to were he could kill one good attack but he kept upgrading his hero an his title when he was finally able to play his hero was at 430 attack he then asked his aliance for resources an one night he laid down the law on this guy took all his cluster of city's an lived happily ever after. well to make a long story short keep lots of stone an gold have a warehouse an some food fields upgrade hero an lay it on him bro
The guy did not break any rules, but he did show poor sportsmanship. Hardly surprising, given that good sportsmanship is a dying concept these days.
Yes, it's a war game. That phrase has two parts: "war" and "game." Too often people become so enamored of the first part that they forget or ignore the second.
I would also point out that even in real war, there are always some behaviors that are frowned upon by all sides and times when it's appropriate and even necessary to acknowledge your enemies as human beings. This is why we have the Geneva Conventions, why American and German troops in WWII were known to lay down their arms and sing hymns together on Christmas Eve, and why many soldiers who have been captured in battle over the years have returned safely home in the end (although many others, sadly, have not.)
I, for one, wish there was a little more real honor among Evony players and a little less of the numerical kind. Kicking a guy while he's down may be allowed, but it's still a lousy thing to do.
You shouldn't be angry at the attacks. However the guy really is a jerk to not offer condolences for loosing your grandmother.
You have to take everything said with a pinch of salt, as people have said this is the internet after all. Just because someone tells you something doesnt mean its true. I know of someone who has had 9-10 people tell him something cancer related.
Someone told me his grandma was ill and he was going to be away for 7-10 days... I said sorry to hear that and hope she gets better. I then proceeded to camp time attacks at 3 of his cities so he couldnt holiday and had to port 3 cities to holiday... I guess he was serious and i hope she gets better.
Moral of that story, dont tell people what is going on in your personal life because they will probably take advantage of you, no matter how bad it is.
BirdZilla is watching you
