Help me out here - but I don't see how alliances can help during a war attack on me.
What can an alliance do or what are they supposed to do during an attack on a member??

Attack the person back. They might recall in order to save their resources.
A good alliance offers the following services:
- troop reinforcements, arriving just in time, to smash your attacker's armies.
- counter attacks against the attacker or his alliance mates
- diplomacy - does your attacker really want to declare war against a whole alliance (or alliance family)?
- your alliance mates can send you resources and troop garrisons to help you rebuild quickly after a successful attack against your city.
So, if somebody declares "war", they can recall that?
they can reinforce...and after ur attacked they can send u resources to get u back on ur feet if u lose

is this an entry for thee world chat thread?
I have changed alliances twice because of their inaction to offer me any support! Sometimes just getting the right advice can be helpful! Sometimes you need your alliance to act on your behalf in dealing with the other alliance in order to stop the attacks...So far, I am yet to see any meaningful help that alliance will offer me! I have been colonised twice, first alliance did f-All, and the second time second alliance offered me lots of advice(I do thank them for that) but I am really in need for troops and yet again it seems I am not important enough to be given that level of support! The only thing that alliance is good for is this: Being a member of one narrows down the number of attacks! That is it! Nothing more!
Nope, unless you're speaking specifically of one of your past alliances and not alliances in general. It might apply to bad alliances, but good ones will do what Boleslav said.
Alliances can be anything from entirely useless to a constant lifesaver in the game, it comes down to joining the right one.
It's all Rodri's fault.
