The times that I have used IRC it seems pretty clunky and old fashioned. Skype is fast to update, free to install and can be used for chat / chatrooms / messages and voice calls (free).
The only real problem I've seen in the massive lag the chatrooms have sometimes. Like I'm talking about it takes hours to deliver something.
