The Prevalent Issue: The Case of the Neophyte vs. the Veteran
-A look at the Age I Attack system, the Age II Colonization system, and Beginner's Protection in general-
...
The purpose of this thread is to examine an alternate solution to the issue of newer players getting annihilated by advanced ones, a solution that is better than the current one, which removed the beloved Age I Attack system and implemented the nearly loathed Age II Colonization system. Here I will analyze what I believe to be the core of the issue, and I will then offer what I believe to be a better solution, one that will allow the Age I Attack system and the Age II Colonization system to exist simultaneously in Age II, and still balance the game for the newcomers. Please feel free to skip the "Prelude" section and head directly into the "Substance" section, or if you are particularly in a rush, the "Summary" section.
PRELUDE
Greetings my fellow Evonians. Humbly I approach this "pedestal" today to speak to you of something I consider quite significant. I will attempt to be brief, but I apologize beforehand for any offense. I assure you it is not my intention.
In a sense I am new here, obviously enough, and while that is no disclaimer for ignorance it is worth knowing. However new my account is and however virgin I am to these forums, know that I am not absolutely new to Evony; I originally played Evony Age I on a different account and have recently made the switch to Evony Age II.
Forgive me if this is a rendition of something superior and past, but I have reviewed a great deal of the forum in search of a relevant topic to reply to and have found none with regard to what I wish to communicate, so while I am certain something similar must exist, I am somewhat doubtful that anything exact does. This thread should be, at least to an extent, unique or original. By "should be", I simply mean to express that it is my goal.
SUBSTANCE
Now, with the formalities addressed, I will delve into the premises and conclusions of this thread. It seems to me that there is overwhelming support for a return to the Attack system of Evony Age I, and while there may be some fear by all players that returning to such a hostile system will be detrimental to newcomers, the general consensus remains against the Evony Age II Colonization system.
Note that THIS has most certainly been heavily discussed and even argued about in these forums--I acknowledge that--but I intend to address these issues both traditionally and creatively. I have seen many players make good suggestions both here and in the On-Topic Discussion section created by one Foxybunny with regard to correcting this issue and maintaining something tolerable and good. I am integrating these old ideas into my own conceptualization.
Where I stand, I feel that the Attack system in Age I is indeed better than the Colonization system in Age II, though I can certainly appreciate elements of both, and I am aware that there is some discussion of merging the two; not fully, mind you, but in part. I see no reason why both cannot exist simultaneously, without the need for status change, as previously suggested by another.
I feel that the issue itself is and has always been with Beginner's Protection, again, as previously suggested by another, and I propose that Beginner's Protection be altered in one or more of the following ways: Removal or liberation adjustment of Town Hall level restriction, addition of troop building Quests (previously suggested by another), extension of new "double construction" feature from 72 hours to the entire Beginner's Protection period, extension of Beginner's Protection period.
The issue with the Town Hall restriction is that it doesn't permit players to have 1) the resource plots necessary to fund and feed the creation and stability of an army, and 2) the Cottage levels required to create the idle population required to work the resource plots and create an army.
Thus it needs to be so, that a player can continue to progress a Town Hall past level 4 while remaining under BP status.
The issue with the Quests is that they lack a general emphasis on army creation. No player is in a hurry to DONATE troops, and making more Quests that simply reward the player for making large numbers of certain soldiers can and would help prepare that player for what the real Evony requires.
The reason the double construction period should last longer than 72 hours is because 1) earlier on a player may simply Speedup most construction, which negates the purpose of the feature itself, and 2) structures increase in duration of leveling over time, meaning things begin to take significantly longer to upgrade as time goes on, and if the player is to have the Barracks, resources plots, Beacon Tower level, et cetera, necessary for defense, that player needs more than three days to get things going.
While not all of those are my favorite, they are all definitely potential solutions to the issue of the newcomer being devoured by the veteran.
Summary
So, in summary, I feel that the heart of the issue (the issue of Attacking in Age I vs. Colonizing in Age II) is the new player getting stomped by the advanced one virtually all of the time, and the following is what I feel is necessary to remedy said issue:
- Age I Attack system should be implemented into Age II, along side the separate Age II Colonization system, without any new status additions (ex. "Conquest status" vs. "Colonization status")
- The player, as previously suggested, should be able to select "protected cities", or rather, ONE protected city known as a "Capitol" (a city which may only be colonized, but never conquered)
- Beginner's Protection should be enhanced by one of the afore mentioned "buffs", either the Town Hall restriction is removed or adjusted accordingly, additional Quests focused on large quantities of troop construction are integrated, the newer "double construction" feature is extended throughout, and/or the period itself is extended.
Again, I apologize if this is considered "spam" of some sort. Otherwise, please feel free to add or adjust these ideas to suit your own. Thank you for your time and consideration in reading and replying.
