Default Free Forever....(Or only until you want to advance)

Evony has relied strongly on the marketing campaign "Free Forever.". While trying to play and progress, I've found some contradiction with this statement.

Free, adverb: without cost, payment or charge
    Forever, adverb: never ending, eternally

While it may be free to log in, the point of playing is to advance and this is not possible without spending money. I realize that it costs money to create and maintain a game and I certainly don't begrudge them that. But when the game is advertised specifically as free, it's not right to make it impossible to progress without spending a small fortune. It is only right that the game is presented with the appropriate cost. I see nothing wrong with Premium content and advancing more quickly if you're willing to shell out the cash. The fact is that you need medals to advance and my personal experience is a 0% drop rate after 200+ attacks. The promotion quests even tell you what level valleys to attack for which medals. But there are no drops, unless you count your jaw when you see the true cost of playing.

101% agreed, lets see if the mods agree... If they just increased the medal drop rates it wouldint be such a hypocrite statement as it were.

The game is free to play. And always has been. No one here ever said that spending money on it doesn't confer a certain advantage. It does. Undoubtedly. But many players have succeeded at and enjoyed this game without spending a dime. Undoubtedly.

I have been playing since before server 88 even opened, I have only spent 5 dollars on the game, and that was just out of necessity, and have not spent a dime since. I believe the free-forever campaign is correct, and am patiently waiting on SS30 for the game to give me what I need to complete. I may be on it for several years before that happens, but hey, who doesn't like free?

Other then that, You dont really need to spend. Unless you want to play hard.
The only thing that "makes" you want to spend money is impatience and the "I want it now" instant gratification factor. Other than that, there is nothing making anyone spend money on the game.

Ashanta is right (and she better not quote me on that).

I remember making complaints about medal drop rates at one time too, and now I look at the hundreds and thousands of medals I have and realize I was such a noob. Most players are non-paying and do just fine. If you have a huge ego and need to be at the top of the rankings, go ahead and support my gaming habit. I love playing for free, but I understand that Evony has to have a payment method and bonus system in there (or put Coke and McDonalds ads on the castle walls) so I can continue to play, else Mrs. BoozeHound would leave me if I spent anything on this game.

I don't spend a dime on the game because I can't. I live in Japan and all my credit cards have USA based addresses. Evony will not process them for that reason. The only way I can earn game coins is by helping others with their commission quests by donating troops to help them uprise.
You can play this game without spending a dime AND progress. It is just going to take you many many many more hours (months) than those who pay. But everyone CAN get to the same level, eventually.
As for the medal drops, I have noticed that drops change as your rank, pres and title grows. When I had 1 city and was a civilian and had like 50k pres, I was getting tons of drops from valleys and flats. Mich scripts, lost armor scripts, gems, materials, etc... all from low level valleys. But when I grew more those drops dried up. Now I need to hit lv8+ NPCs to get the good drops. If I hit low level valleys now I only get delicate gems and rose medals and maybe an occassional speaker.

If you do not put a dime into this game AND have a normal life and not online 24x7,expect to spend months building up... 5-6 months. This is a LONG TERM game. The players with the cool Level 150 heros with 400 attack and with 10 cities and 150 lv10 barracks are 1) the freaks who stay online 24x7, 2) The ones who use hacks and exploit bugs 3) multi accounters 4) people who pay. Bottom line, they are not normal. lol. Age II has only been out for a short time. It will take some players an entire year to get everything built up to where they want it, heros and all.

I spent a small amount, so I can't say I play totally free. I will wait to see if the proposed improvements in balance and bug fixing works before I commit too much.

However I spent a small enough amount that it is nearly the same as free. I see several ways to play and advance free or close.

Facebook friends gifts can help a lot. Conquering a level 10 NPC can solve many many level 10 issues and quests you may have. Being organized can help a lot to make sure you dont spend too much time online. (log on, do your attacks and get off) Plan ahead for food problems if you have too many troops. Keep barracks running 24/7 draft extra troops from your colonies....the list goes on.

The change in drop rates for materials (outside of gems and medals) were changed quitely by developers about 3 or 4 weeks ago. It has nothing to do with your rank, title or play style. After much uproar Dawnseeker asked about it and finally admitted the change. It was classed as a 'bug' that needed to be fixed. Dawnseeker has also admitted that devs constantly moniter and adjust drop rates to see the optimum balance for profit versus player progress (former is priority).
I have noticed that more drops of things like speakers, holy water, lost armour scripts and hero scripts are appearing over the last week. Still no materials for hero gear and no amulets from npc or valley attacks. And mick scripts are still only really found on rare hits on lv.10s.
