Taking valleys can be part of a bigger war strategy. Alone it is noobish. But as part of a bigger strategy....there are advantages.

It is kinda like guerrilla tactics. Harrass the enemy..annoy him....then get him to fight where you have the best advantage.

Just be sure going in that if you annoy him you will eventually need to be prepared to fight.

Annoying him just for annoying sakes is pretty noobish. Annoying him so you get to fight where YOU want the fight....instead of where HE wants to fight can be smart.

One of the best examples is the war of 1812 with General Andrew Jackson.

He had his defensive parapet guarded on one side by a river and the other by a swamp. and a 10 foot moat in front. Nightly he attacked sentries and small landing forces. (Harrassing, annoying, demoralizing, but not really damaging) But he refused to engage directly head to head in daylight. (Suicide) Once the full British force landed it was still double the Jacksons and 10 times as experienced. (Having just beaten Napoleon at Waterloo) This forced the British to attack the defensive position and Jackson won handily.
