Back in November last year I mapped a whole state on server 4 in excel.
Server 4 have 200 * 200 square states, so in total that is 40,000 squares per state.
What we found when analysing the statistics for the server was that the map of that state comprised of just over 9% of each valley, or 3600-3700 of each in absolute numbers. This means that valleys (Forests, Hills, Deserts, Grassland, Swamps and Lakes) in total make up some 56% of the map, leaving 44% for flats, npcs and cities.
The split for NPC's, flats and cities will naturally vary since cities can be barbed, npc's can be captured etc.
So, in case you ever wondered; there it is. The experienced player will realise how that percentage can be used in game. It would be intersting to hear from others who have done the same analysis on their states or servers.
