Interesting insight, Rodri. I'd think Sylvester McCoy was older than Colin Baker, and perhaps that Pertwee was older than Troughton - but in general, that is the trend. Curiously, it's not been until very recently that an angle of romantic tension was added to the plot. One wonders if those might be connected.
I'm a fan of Tennant as the Doctor (though I've seen and liked him in a few other things) and I did greatly enjoy Eccleston's run - first truly original take on The Doctor as a character in many many years, celery stalks notwithstanding. My favorite is Tom Baker; despite a severe handicap in terms of both writing and special effects, his character's perpetual nonchalance and eccentricity made him truly glorious.
I've not yet met this new Doctor, but I've every hope that he's as good - and as original.
