It's nice to see comedies being mentioned. They are far too often forgotten by the academy for being great movies. You will almost never see a comedy or action movie nominated for the "best movie" Oscar.

As long as we are mentioning comedies of that era, I would like to add a movie I've seen dozens of times, and could easily watch a few dozen more, at least. Dirty, Rotten Scoundrels is a masterpiece with Steve Martin and Michael Caine.

A fantastic old comedy from the B&W movie era is Arsenic and Old Lace, starring Cary Grant. It is directed by the incomparable Frank Capra.

Instead of seeing those as a movie, be cultured and see the musical/play respectfully.

Aye. The Arsenic and Old Lace play is better than the movie. At least, the version I saw was better. But, the movie is more accessible, and this thread is about movies.

Just because its about movies doesn't mean we can't discuss the fact that it was a better something else...

Cool Hand Luke (1967) - It is the story of a man who refuses to be nailed down or conform to the rules and regulations of a society that he has never craved to fit into. It is a great movie, I would give it an A+.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) - it is a British horror, comedy/rock opera film. Great music and dancing. It was directed by Jim Sharman. There is also a play of this movie. It has the longest-running theatrical release in film history. I would give it an A+ if you like classics, singing and weird dancing this is a good movie for you.
I'll edit my small list when I think of some more movies.

I say "Thin Red Line" is best . A fair, brutal and savage story.
Really? How's that? If anything, it made the Germans look like bad-es. Hundreds of WWII vets have said it's the most realistic war movie ever made, I imagine there's a reason for that.

I have refused to see this movie out of respect for Kesey's wishes.
