I agree with A Raptor if ya don't wanna use a nuke use a conventional boom, or we could seek the almighty Rota and get him to solve our problem and neko_lord that could work to but to save all those hippies going on and on about "no don't use a nuke you will destroy the world" I would use a conventional boom

Though I think that nuclear energy is a great alternative to the present ones that we have, I can't say that it's the best. True, it does have very good advantages, such as not contributing much to pollution (as compared to oil-based plants and the like) and being a reliable source of energy (there are large deposits of uranium that is available earth-wide, and these can last for even a thousand years).

However, there's also the risk of a meltdown and/or radiation if ever safety precautions against these weren't made and followed to the letter and/or these same precautions were breached, which can then result to serious and highly irreversible damage not only to the environment, but also [and more importantly] to the people within its reach. Nuclear waste management is also a problem, since it requires storage facilities that are safe, reinforced, and very much away from the public, because the byproducts/residues stay radioactive for thousands of years and can cause serious damage if it leaked.

Plus, educating the public (as what had been stated previously in this thread) about the merits of nuclear energy is an uphill battle. People still have grave fears when there's talk about nuclear energy, remembering the Chernobyl/Three Mile Island incident.

Anyway, back to the topic ... I just hope the people who actually have the power to make some changes in the Gulf would stop skirting around the issue and take a positive step in the right direction instead. It's been too long without much noticeable change for the better. >.>

The only thing conventional explosives would produce is a compression wave (shockwave). I'm relatively sure that wouldn't be effective alone. You'd have to get lucky and collapse enough material to form a blockage. With a nuclear detonation, you add in massive amounts of heat. The hope would be that you could fuse geologic structures to form a seal, not just a blockage.
