In Evony Age II you can play defense or offense just like chess. And just like chess, offense (white) always has the advantage. But being offensive in Evony Age II may surprise you. Read on.
Nobody is a real threat in Evony Age II if you know how to play smart. In Evony Age II you can be a Colonizer (a Suzerain) or be colonized. Contrary to what you might think, a Suzerain in Evony Age II actually plays DEFENSE. Once you are colonized you switch from playing Defense to OFFENSE. Someone who colonizes another person must defend against uprises. Someone who is colonized becomes offensive in game play as they are in a position to attack (uprise against) the person who colonized them. If you are using your troops to colonize other players and conquer Capital/Historical sites, what you are doing is indeed initially offensive. But once you capture a Capital/Historical site or colonize another player, you must become DEFENSIVE as others will try to take it from you and kill your troops or uprise against you. The opposite is true if someone is attempting to colonize you. In the initial attack of someone trying to colonize you, you can be defensive and try to fight them off. But once you are colonized your game play switches from being defensive to offensive as you are now in a position to attack the player who colonized you. And if colonized you can still attack Capitals/Historical sites. If you are always fighting off other players from trying to colonize you, then you will be constantly playing defense. And if you are constantly trying to colonize other players, you will INITALLY play offense, but after colonizing a player you will play defense. If you always want to play offense and not worry much about defense, then a good strategy is to ALLOW your cities to be colonized. If colonized, you can still be a very strong player, and in most cases even more powerful than the one who colonized you. Read on, the rest will be explained.
Also, you can boost your hero by adding gear to him/her. To add gear to your hero the hero must be level 10+. Go to your Workshop, do research on a gear item. After research is complete go to feasting hall, click on the hero, click view, click on the gear box you just completed research for and add it on your hero.
A final note about Heros, you can capture your own SUPERHERO and nobody can take it from you. Every player can do this and every player has the ability to capture one, one per player. We are not talking about Historical/Legendary Heros in Age II, we are talking about having a Queen or King as your Hero and nobody can take it from you. To capture one follow the very firwst quest "Queen" or "King". It will eventually tell you to capture a Level 8 Barbarian City and afterwards capture a level 10 Barbarian City. After completing that Quest you will be rewarded with a special Hero. This Hero will be yours forever and nobody can take it from you. So level up the special hero as high as you can and use it often!
If you pay to play you can simply buy game coins. But if you are like me and do not pay for anything, then you can EARN game coins by "donating" troops to help players uprise. You do this in Quests > Commission Quests. Sometimes you will see players who are offering game coins to whoever donates troops to help them uprise. Only one person can win the "bid" and earn the game coins. The Commission Quests are not always full of players offering coins to those who donate troops. Sometimes it is empty. So check it often. You can use the coins to buy materials so you can level up your hero gear in the workshop.
Nobody can destroy your city or take it like age 1. Take your time, keep building. Don't worry about being colonized. It is to be expected as you build up. So don't turn into a scared little girl. If everyone on the entire server declared war on just you, very little would happen to you. In age 2 only ONE person can colonize you. And if you play smart, colonization does very very little to prevent you from becoming just as strong or stronger as the person who colonized you. So keep building.
If colonized you can prevent your Suzerain (the one who colonized you) from effecting you. As you build up your troops and Heros you can garrison them in other players cities. This will protect your troops and Heros from being drafted by the Suzerain. Use nearby players cities to "store/hide" your troops and heros. Simply recall your troops and heros from the other players city when you want to use them. Then send them back to garrison when they are not in use.
A historical city is a "capital city" of a state or region. If you own a historical city, you have the authority to set policies on cities that surround the Historical site, policies such as tax on other cities, levy food, disarm 10% of any city's troops, draft 10% of any city's troops and re-deploy population, capture their Heros, all this without ever having to attack or colonize individual players. But owning a historical city is a two edge sword as it will put you on constant defense mode.
If someone wants to colonize your city you have 2 options:
1)Open gates, put all troops in that city and fight them if you think you can win.
2)Keep gates closed, let them do it, your troops won't die. Next, ship your troops and heros out to garrison cities of other players. Then build/rally troops for a future uprise.
Other alliance members can send you troops to help you uprise and fight off a Suzerain. OR.... if other members are colonized by the same person, you can uprise together and the Suzerain must fight both of you at the same time. So group uprises are a good idea. Or, have players reinforce your colonized city and their troops will help you fight during the uprise. But be warned, if someone REALLY wants to colonize you, they will do it. It may take them a few times to do it, but they will eventually succeed. One player had people try to colonize him over 60 times, he eventually lost. In fact, you may want to lure players into colonizing you by making your city look weak by having little troops and small defenses. Then after you are colonized, recall 500k troops you have hidden in other players cities and uprise, possibly killing off all the troops of the Suzerain.
If you are colonized and garrison your troops in another players city, you MIGHT lose your troops. Reasons you may lose your troops if garrisoned in another players city include: The other player has their gates open or the other player does not have enough food to feed your troops.
If you don't want to be colonized then you will need to consistantly have ~500k archers in your city with full defenses and gates OPEN. But this type of city is hard to support as you will need tons of food and you will be busy everyday playing the game just to keep your troop numbers high. Also, you will be on constant defense. Many working adults do not have time to sustain a city like that. That is why I personally prefer to always keep my gates closed, a small number of troops and defenses in my cities BUT keep my main troops & Heros safely garrisoned in other players cities as "safe" cities. When I get online and want to play, I simply recall my troops, use them to attack some targets, then send them back when I am done. This is how I consistantly play offensive. It does not matter if my cities are colonized at all. In fact, I prefer to have my cities colonized. When my cities are colonized my Suzerain protects my cities. If someone tries to attack me, they actually fight my Suzerains troops, not mine. So I do not mind at all if I pay some sucker 10% of my production to have his army protect my cities and deter others from disturbing me. It lets me build in peace, which is why I am much stronger than my Suzerain. The only thing I need to worry about is protecting my troops and heros from being drafted.
If you think that capturing a historical site is all good, think again. You will need to defend it with hordes of troops and have other team members reinforce it. As a result MOST of your army will be cramed into the historical to defend it. You will always need to defend it. If a few strong players sent massive waves to it, most of your troops, if not all defending troops will be killed and your army wiped out. How will you defend a historical AND your cities from colonization and players who uprise? Can your troops be in two places at once? Do you want to constantly defend a historical? Constantly on the defense? Or would you rather build troops and attack historicals owned by other alliances and kill off their armies? The decision is yours. But our alliance is offensive, not defensive. We build up, send out troops and kill off enemies, then do it again. We do it from colonized cities, non-colonized cities, makes no difference if others colonize our cities because all of our army is hidden. So you can actually allow yourself to be colonized and be very very offensive in age 2. Or you can own a historical or colonize other players and become very very defensive by fighting off uprises and those who attack your historical. The choice is yours. How do you want to play the game?
