    Default Roman culture today

I know that pretty much all of our society is based on the Romans, but I would like to know what examples you can find. Please don't mention democracy, it's quite obvious.

    My example is: Public swimming.

Well, democracy as a body politic originated with the Athenian Greeks in the form of a direct democracy which reached its height under the Athenian strategus Pericles while a republican mode of government originated with the Romans. The Roman republic was a mixed institution with an authoritarian element in the form of the imperium or authority of the two chief magistrates of the Republic or the consuls, the Roman Senate as in an advisory capacity until it would later devolve and degenerate into an oligarchy during the late Republican period and republican elements with magistrates representing the common interests of the citizenry as well as certain political groups and parties and a plebiscite that appealed to the masses or to the rabble in extreme measures or in matters of considerable significance. The viewpoint of the Roman Republic as a mixed institution with checks and balances and defined divisions of authority in its civil government is expressed by Niccolo Machiavelli in his republican treatise The Discourses on the First Ten Books of Titus Livy.

How about the whole idea of putting someone on public display for their physical abilities? Now, sure, we don't tend to put people to the death if they fail now, but...

That kind old lady stopped the rain for us.
She said it would only make us cold, and miserable, and sick.
We thanked her and hugged her and she walked away smiling warmly.
    I miss the puddles...

How about concrete? The romans invented it.
They also built their roads in the same way we do. (we copy their method)
They had underfloor heating, indoor toilets, incredible glass making skills and many other things we think of as modern.

[EDIT] I just thought of one more. The "All You Can Eat" buffet. [/EDIT]
