    Default Avocado

So I'm in the supermarket, groping away at the avocados to try to find one that's ready to use without being too old, y'know. As you do.

Anyway, it was really frustrating. I ended up talking to the produce manager and suggesting that he change the way he places avocados in the store. Basically I suggested that they have a section for avocados that are ready to use, and a section for avocados that will be ready in a few days' time. I mean, that's how they organize their banana section.

The produce manager fixes me with a steely gaze and replies "we find people like to buy avocados of all different ripeness".

So here is my question - do you eat underripe or overripe avocados? Have you ever heard of such a thing? I always assumed avocados were like pork, (good to eat or not) rather than beef (cooked according to taste). Am I wrong?

Uhm... it's a fruit about the size and shape of a pear, but it has a black skin and lots of green flesh inside which is buttery and tasty and can be used to make guacamole.

Where I live, ripe avocados are unheard of. They simply are not available. Same with pears for some reason. The simple answer is to buy a few underripe ones and drop them in a paper bag and leave them on the kitchen counter for 24-48 hours. Voila...ripe!

It just requires a bit of pre-planning on your menus.
