Well Billy, due to the sheer weight of any rocket propelled vehicle, and the typical trajectory of them (Usually a very steep angle, more often then not, straight up), this means that the rocket propelled vehicle is fighting to tear free of gravity, and to ensure that gravity doesn't take hold again. A vertical take-off from the ground is naturally going to take longer, because all your speed is gathered AFTER you leave the ground. But a horizontal take-off (Such as with a plane), is going to be faster, because you are gathering speed BEFORE leaving the ground.
