I like this idea for a thread!
I agree that this seems absurd - unless there is a language gap, in which case it's totally valid. I've relied on this gesture in countries where I didn't know the language.
On the surface this does seem an odd thing to say, but I'd argue it serves two purposes at once (1) a reassurance that whatever is lost will eventually be found, and (2) you may need to broaden the search wider to find it. I think it's OK.
This shouldn't be viewed in isolation - it's the opening gambit in a conversation with a person you don't know.
Me: "Has the bus come yet?"
Old Lady: "What bus, dearie?"
Me: "The number 23"
Old Lady: "It should be here any minute now"
I dislike these phrases: "With all due respect..." and "You're being empowered to..."
"With all due respect..." is flat out rude, since the not so subtle message is "I don't respect you much at all".
Whenever someone tells me "You're being empowered to..." I've always found myself doing extra work that the person who "empowered" me could and perhaps should have done instead.
