As far as casuality goes, I have an idea that (may not be right, but) seems perfectly consistent to me... Now, basically, what you figure is that whatever happened in the past, already happened. (Obvious, I know...) Anyway, this includes anyone who time travelled into the past. Therefore, if I were to, right now, go into the past, then anything I do would have already been taken into account in the present, before I went into the past. (Does this make any sense?)
For example: So I'm sitting here now. My father's father is currently alive. That means that nobody has succeeded in killing him before now. Say I want to try to go into the past and kill him before my father's born, to go with the classic problem. Well... He wasn't killed. That means I must have failed. So I go into the past, try to kill him, and fail. Simple as that.
