Victimizations involving a firearm represented 8% of the 6.3 million violent crimes of rape and sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated and simple assault.

    Murders committed with firearms

    # 1 South Africa: 31,918
    # 2 Colombia: 21,898
    # 3 Thailand: 20,032
    # 4 United States: 9,369

    (A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.
    (B) Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000.
    (C) Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171.

(Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept. of Health Human Services)

    Guns
    (A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000.
    Yes, that is 80 million.

    (B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500.
    (C) The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is 0.000188.

Population of the United states 309,823,733
40% of all US homes have guns

Now, if you look at these statistics I think there are several things that can be learned. Guns are not as big a deal as everyone makes them out to be. Laws regarding firearms actually needs to be enforced, not new controls put in place. Gun safety is a huge issue and more people need to not own a gun if they cannot lock it up properly.

Australia was like around #10 on a list of 20 countries

Correction, that was Austria. Australia was in the high teens.

Heh the firearms laws in Australia are really not as useful as the ones in the states.

You also have to take into consideration the population of a nation. The U.S. has a much higher population than the countries in the top 3, yet less murders by firearms.

From my understanding of the U.S Laws, they greatly improve the safety of homes agaist invasion, something that imo Australia could benefit from greatly, but we are very hyper-sensitive with all our laws its quite ridiculous.

You might want to check your math there. I don't think that 1 in 7 doctors kill someone every year.

Also, I definitely agree that people should get to keep guns in their house. If I had it my way, you'd get to make a gun INTO your house!

If you don't trust the statistics then contact the US department of health and human services, since they are the ones that compiled the information. Accidental could mean anything from botched surgery, inaction, wrong medication, to poor treatment of a symptom.

Your definition of 'accidental' is simply far too broad. If a doctor is away from a patient's room when they get visitors and the visitors forget to wash their hands, giving the patient an infection which, combined with whatever they were in the hospital for, eventually leads to their death, can you really say the doctor accidentally killed that patient?
