I mocked this particular thread and tried to reveal its silliness through the image. The posted image is a good example of fin de siecle painting and it is titled "Roman Decadence". It is a good work with numerous clashing colors that reveals the corruption, effeminacy and vulgar pleasures of the Grecians and Romans. This image depicts lascivious men and women revelling in their drunken festivity and orgiastic ceremony. There is also a sharp contrast between the inebriated revellers and the cold, austere statues of the great philosophers that are being defiled by these sybarites. It is a bacchanalian scene that reveals the depravity of man in general as well.
If you would like to read about the decay of civilization, cultural decadence and the disintegration of traditional moral values, I recommend Sallustius Crispus' [Sallust] On the Jugurthine War, On the Catilinarian Conspiracy and his unfinished The Histories.
