You mean if Rommel played Fuhrer? I disagree. Firstly it was impossible for Germany to win World War 2 anyway (I can elaborate on that if you want) and secondly Rommel was a tactician. While successful in his specific theatre of war, he never received any strategic training and I doubt he would have been cut out to deal with things on a larger scale than say, army level, whereas if you take out the insanity with Hitler I think it's safe to say he was a bit more clued up on strategy than people like to think. An easy example would be the Caucasus. Germany had a constant oil shortage and had to rely on the oilfields at Ploesti or synthetic oil, and being able to occupy Baku would have in theory helped allievate this. The only problem with Hitler is that he didn't factor in the logistical problem regarding this issue since even if the Caucasian oilfields were captured intact then there would be no way to transport this back to Germany since the Ostheer was already overstretched.Rommel in my opinion was a very very talented General and had he been running the show instead of Hitler the Germans probably would have won the war
I'd say on average 1.5 divisions landed on each beach at Normandy. Now how are the Germans going to amass the required amount of divisions to defeat this threat and hide them all? And if you look at the geography adjacent to the beaches, you'll notice it's very flat and it's only further inland that you enter the bocage. Bear in mind that the use of 6th, 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions as well at Pegasus Bridge and near Utah beach added to the confusion on the German side. 21. Panzer-Division on 6. June 1944 was located in Caen which may I add was very close to the beach, and even they were unable to muster a serious attack against the Allied troops. With the initial chaos of 5/6 June, I think it would have took a while to organise an attack and knowing that there may be a tank threat the Allies would attempt to create as much confusion as possible prior to landing to minmise the chance of a heavy counterattack.now Rommel given time and a bit of leeway could have hidden these tanks in forests and bunkers out of sight from the air rather close to the beaches which when he gave the order could have sprung forth and decimated the allies due to the fact most of the bombardment on the German positions was on the artillery batteries
The problem is, Hitler reached a deadly compromise. Rather than giving Rommel his tanks or Rundstedt his, he simply split the forces between them. Like I said, 21. Panzer-Division was located very close to the beaches but yet one division against a massive force descending on the beaches supported by massive air and sea artillery won't be able to do much. Considering the naval guns are capable of firing further inland too, the Allies could simply consolidate their bridgehead while allowing all of their artillery and aircraft to bombard the land ahead of them in to oblivion.and the Navy would not have fired on the Germans for fear of hitting the Allies. But as it was had Hitler have realised the tanks when Rommel wanted them right after the landings instead of thinking them a farce and holding them at Calais Rommel again might have inflicted massive casualties on the Allies and
This contradicts your first statement I quoted saying Rommel could have won the war. So would they have prolonged it or won the war?successively stalled fer time which would have allowed the German to bring up rienforcements prolonging the war.
