If I recall correctly, Rommel knew exactly where the landings were going to be. But Hitler discounted Rommel's advice and sent Rommel to Calais. So when the landings began Rommel had to take his divisions and race them to Normandy. Before the landing at Normandy we had parachuted in specific people to help organize the resistance for attacks during the landing, to help keep Rommel's response time to the landing slowed. We also parachuted in at the time of the landings a group who's specific job it was to Harass Rommel and slow him even further giving allied troops more time to take the Atlantic wall and establish and allied European front.

So do I think the Normandy landing could have been prevented? Yes, if Hitler had listened to Rommel and gave him what he wanted to defend the correct landing point. Rommel was considered, at the time of the landing, the biggest threat and the only thing that could make the landing fail. It might have taken another year to establish a new landing on European soil. By then the Russians would have been in Germany, continuing on towards France, forever changing the political landscape of Europe.

Also, about bringing troops up so close to the beaches. Rommel had also requested enough artillery to fire on the ships off the coast, and a few large pieces of artillery capable of firing back at our battleships from behind the Atlantic wall.
