    Remember, consistency is key....
First, screw stars unless ALL of your workshop research is level 10. DO NOT burn your gems otherwise.
"Aw man! But Japanpimp, that will take like, forever!!"
Well, this is a long term game so suck it up and stay focused.
After you [broke down and bought materials so you can] reach level 10 research on all workshop gear use the Auto Upgrade tool for the stars. Auto upgrade to 4 stars on every gear with delicate gems only.
After everything is 4 stars, use the Auto Upgrade tool again. This time set it to upgrade to level 7 using flawless gems FROM level 5. There is a way to select that with the Auto Upgrade tool pull down menus. If you fail an upgrade the stars will fall to 4 or something, I forgot. Repeat the process until all stars are 7.

Once all stars hit level 7 use the same Auto Upgrade tool and push all stars to 8. If you fail an upgrade it will reset you to 0. Repeat the process starting from the beginning with the delicate gems.

Once all stars on every piece of gear are at 8, skip 9 and push them to 10. Again, use the Auto Upgrade tool. If you fail then repeat the process from the beginning with delicate gems.

Once all stars are 10 use manual and push every gear star set to 11. You will get more than 50% of all your stars from 10 to 11. For the ones that fail repeat the process from the beginning.

I did this process and was able to upgrade all my stars on every piece of gear from 0 to 11 in under an hour. And it was cool to see my name flash on the screen 9 times in 5 minutes when I manually went from 10 to 11. And I only used about 2,000 gems.

The point is, upgrade stars in small steps and across the board. Be consistent. Never ever try to upgrade all the way up to 12 or 13 in one shot. You will burn more gems than god. You need to "paint" the star upgrades in "coats". First spray on a layer of all level 4 stars. Then spray on a layer of all level 7 stars. Etc....

Now, some may argue that it does not matter how you upgrade the stars because percents are percents and numbers are numbers. Well, Evony is not a calculator. It does not work like that. If it did not matter then every battle you fight you could predict exact losses if you had all of the information. But we all know it does not work like that. For some reason my process is very effective. I don't know why. But it is.
I don't get it... why didn't you say this in your first post on this thread and at least a lot of us wouldn't have been confused about what you were trying to get at... it was that simple... at least now I know what you meant by process, however this doesn't guarantee anything (although even I would do it this way) and doesn't really address what the OP was talking about, this belongs more in a new thread to be honest. You aren't addressing any of his math and it doesn't really go on topic to his simulations and averages nor his formulas.

And addressing your last bit, leadership has been thrown in the mix and you don't know the enemy hero's intel/attack most of the times but yes there's a bit of variance to make things interesting, however none of us truly know whether the star system is 100% up to chance or there's a huge amount involved in the process.
