Default Why Delusion is so scary

Two of the scariest movies I've ever seen were:
    The Mist (2007 version)
Lord of The Flies (the 1963 or 1990 version)

The reason why they were so scary was because delusion caused large groups of people in both movies to degenerate quickly into savagery despite very rational people who tried to prevent it.

When a group of people get a "mob" mentality and blindly follow delusions which have mislead their minds and judgement past all reasoning it is extremely scary. Because it can turn a group of people from a rational group into a fanatical, extreme and even crazy group that may do very dangerous things as a result.
There are examples this everywhere. When groups go bad and things start to snowball into completely irrational and dangerous behaviour which is almost impossible to stop because they have lost their senseableness....

Yeah, when the crazy church lady started that crazy senseless mob in the store.
And the ending, yeah, that was pretty intense. It really drove home the point of deslusion.

It is very interesting how fast a group of rational people can (potentially) devolve into a pack of panicky reactionaries.
It's scary/ creepy because it reveals the potential beast within.

For the Mist; since I haven't seen the other

Well, I believe, they became deluded when the crazed religious woman took lead of most of the group. She began to preach of how it was the end of the world, that it was their own undoing, and how they should pray for forgiveness from God. She took normal thinking people, and brain washed them into thinking her own way. By doing this, the small group that weren't so easily "changed" were hated, some killed because they didn't believe. The woman tried to have her "followers" kill the small group of non-believers, so they wouldn't try and force the group to think straight.

Of course, I could be wrong, and I'll most likely get crap, but, whatever.

You should watch each of the films. But in both stories the majority of the group, who was normal and reasonable to begin with, allowed their sense of reason to be overshadowed or deluded by a very unreasonable, even twisted, person or persons.
Like if a Cult leader came to your town and started twisting and deluding the minds of the people to the point where most began to agree with the Cult leader. Agreeing that everyone over 40 has been taken over by microscopic alien mind controllers so everyone over 40 must be killed. Then the once normal people begin killing everyone over 40, even those in their own group.

It is hard to answer your question. Because in order to answer it I would need to sumarize both movies... which I am not going to do. So the best thing for you to do is watch them or read a summary of them.
