My experience comes from being the Vice Host of two alliances on Na14- the current one being the top alliance on the server, being the #8 ranked player in prestige (without turning in medals for prestige- as prestige is pretty much useless) and #4 by title, owning 2 of the top 10 historic heroes on the server, and well- I don't need to go on because this isn't a contest.
When I was new- I saw lumber was the most expensive item on the market- and there was a quest to build a market btw- so noobs know about markets. So I made as many sawmills as possible- I didn't need to be told. I actually filed a bug report because I had filled up all the resource plots for my level 4 town hall and couldn't build any more sawmills and didn't know I needed to upgrade the town hall.
I quickly realized that resources were going to be important in the game, and that without a good build I would slow myself down.
Now- I understand that you like playing from a colonized position, but I consider that a weak position and a defeatist position. Most prestige farmers are colonies. If you are active- it isn't hard to make it to the top 200 at all. In fact, I once scouted the #6 ranked person in prestige on Na14 at the time and saw that he had almost no troops there. Prestige is pretty worthless unless you use it as a deterrent.
My point is that 99% of people don't want to be colonies. If you like it, fine. But most people view colonization as a defeat. Your credentials don't impress me that much and I honestly think you need to learn the game more fully before giving advice.
I own a historic city and helped in the capture of 4 other ones. How many do you own? How many colonies have you captured? Have you completed your queen quest yet? I think you need to play the other side of the game to understand some of the more advanced concepts.
