having read through the responses i dont think anyone has addressed your ultimatum. i hear what you said we would hear.

someone will correct me if i miss quote here i'm sure. but i believe Ben Franklin said
any one willing to give up a little freedom for a little security deserves nether.
i was raise to know and understand that every choice has an inescapable consequence. no one can make you do anything. even holding a gun to my head and saying "you will do X or i will shoot you" leaves me a choice. the starving people in my cannibalism thread are faced with a choice, eat or die. its still a choice. one can chose to die in those situations. its not a common choice, but it is an option.
to my mind freedom is the ability to make choices for ones self. if security is going to be set up as its counter it must therefor be always knowing someone else will tell you what to do. ie not making any choices for ones self.

given those two options i will gladly choose freedom over security. i would rather deal with the consistences of my own mistakes then risk suffering from someone elses.
i think its human nature to feel that way. parenting books will tell you that if your 2yr old is acting out give them more "freedom" in their life. allow them to make choices that will not hurt them. allow them to learn from their mistakes in a safe environment. "would you like red or purple jelly?" "which of these shirts would you like to wear today?"
if we are teaching out children to use the power of choice they crave wisely i dont see anything wrong with living in total freedom.
but even teaching your offspring is a choice. no one capable of breeding is required to look after any life created by said actions. our delicate sensibilities would only like to think of the less harsh consequences of that choice i'm sure but it is again up to the people involved to make that choice.

give me the freedom to make my own choices, and the freedom to deal with the consequences of those choices.
