Trolling CAN serve a purpose. When the smug and self-satisfied know how to walk a line just shy of breaking forum rules, yet still manage to irritate the living daylights out of everyone on the forum, it leaves little for the moderators to do about that person. When the forum trolls, those who live within the community and feel a deep connection to that community, step into the situation they may be able to improve it.
Sometimes, all they do is make the annoying person shush. Problem solved.
Sometimes, they provoke the annoying person into outright breaking forum rules, thus allowing the moderators a chance to step in and resolve the situation. Problem solved.
Sometimes, though, especially when the trolling is obvious, persistent, or badly handled, it leads to more problems. That, of course, doesn't solve the problem.
As a result, the trolls who can keep themselves in check and handle things properly are tolerated and even welcomed by the forum staff. The best of the trolls get promoted to moderator *coughboleslavcough*.
