16s aren't "almost impossible". They just require more time and a bit more thought on how to conquer. It took all of 4 hours for several of us to redo our movement math and make projections about the required number of troops. A high end player might need double than the previous to take it, but a low end player, with 300attack and 100k max per wave needs about 20% more barracks time to build the necessary troops, and it wasn't like the figures for 300attack/100k waves was really high before. I'm sure if I asked around, the top 30 players in my alliance would have enough troops to take approximately 4 of them, the only hard part is planning it out.
Every game has an endgame, and every game has a point at which it is good to reevaluate how long we should continue playing it. At this point, I'm quite thankful that Age 2 has been far more interesting than Age 1 and it kept me involved for at least twice as long.
