Really is that so? Why do you think you can stare at them for so long?

i think that life is the most expressive form of art. and the hardest to captivate.
for that is what all forms of art mimic. what truer expression of the soul is there then life?

music, art, dance, play, still and moving pictures, sculpture, weaving, written and spoken word... all attempt to captivate a moment in life.

and i disagree with Japanapimp that you need to come from the same culture and time to understand the writings of someone and truly see the genius of their work. so many grate writers were appreciated in their time as well as in ours. there are works of art in many forms that transcended time and culture the apt example of Shakespeare given above is only one of many i could list but dont feel like taking the time to, knowing i will leave one or two out and then someone would come down on me for it.

I greatly admire the sculptures and multitudinous poems of the divine Michelangelo Buonarroti, Raphael's The Academy of Athens/The School of Plato, the paintings of the Italian Baroque master Caravaggio, the paintings of the French Neo-Classicist Nicolas Poussin, the works of Jacques-Louis David [The Oath of the Horatii, The Distribution of the Eagle Standards, The Death of Socrates and Napoleon Crossing the Great St. Bernard Pass], Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres' Napoleon on His Imperial Throne and Eugene Delacroix's The Justice of Trajan and The Death of the Assyrian Monarch Sardanapalus.

Well. I suppose your right but,not all art is based off life. There are arts based off sadness, happiness.

For some life cant be the greatest form of expression,My life is extremely sad,I dont have expression through living life. The only thing I can do is draw to express what i have to express.

My life has been bittersweet since day 1,Life isnt expression for me.

Forgive me for not understanding what you mean.

I've always liked Native American Art, whether it be in the form of paintings or carvings. Love the simplistic colors that make each work of art pop, and how they incorporate these big stories/legends to each painting/carving. (props to my ancestors and current artists!)
    Such as:

Not sure about what story befalls this art as I just ripped it from Google Images, but it's just an example of the kind of work i'm talking about.

I actually used to do this kind of drawing myself some years ago when I was younger, and I was pretty good. So good, I could have actually apprenticed under someone but I chose my family over it bc I was really home sick at the time. Oh well, at least I know I could do it if I wanted something to do.

I see you're into the gothic art I think it is lovely in its own way. I actually had never heard of Victoris Francis until my ex got this really awesome poster of one of his pieces:

Very interesting work. I myself (when it comes to music and writing) have been born and bred on the idea that music and writing (and painting) are life itself, all three of my brothers are musicians, I'm in the middle (suck at painting, am okay with music/writing - though it's hard to live up to the work my brothers do). I know this is going to sound cheesy, but as for artists, Norman Rockwell will always have a special place in my heart!

    Compliments of the wonderful Warsimi!
