There are very few ways that someone's account here could be "hacked" in an involuntary manner...
1) Keylogger: Semi-involuntary, as it still requires the victim to install software on their computer.
2) Phishing: Sites that claim to give rewards and ask for input of account login information. Again, semi-involuntary.
3) WiFi packet sniffing / Man-in-the-Middle / Man-in-the-Browser: This comes with a HUGE caveat in that passwords are not sent as clear-text, but are encrypted with a one-way hash, either MD5, SHA-1, or a combination of both. Getting the password from this would require processing power and the use of what's called "Rainbow Tables". Google it for further explanation.
4) Use of a proxy server, where the proxy server's owner is recording all traffic flowing through it. Even if this happens, the same one-way hash and Rainbow Table method would be required. Even if this were the case, I'm sure there'd be much more interesting bits of data than an Evony account/password, such as bank account information, corporate trade secrets, corporate logins, etc...
The plain fact of the matter is that the most likely way anyone has their Evony account "hacked" is that the person simply gave their email address and password to someone so that their account could be "watched" while they were offline. The whole "security code" thing is just as easily given to someone that has been designated as the account watcher... Secondary to that would be keylogging or phishing.
So, the question becomes, is Evony responsible for someone else's poor judgement? I don't think they should be. The "victim" (the person who has now had their account reset) tried to gain an advantage, and may have had an advantage for a period of time, but such rewards carry risk. Sometimes that risk will catch up with people, and they will have learned they made a wrong choice about who they deemed trustworthy.
