I don't maintain a big army anymore, but they are still fine. If you limit the number of troops people have, people will be not risk them as much. Making the game more boring. And as a more casual player, 130k Archers or so, proper layering (size 1 or 0) and a big enough hero, you can slaughter most any single attack with no losses, except maybe some size 1 layers. Assuming you are online and all that. So once you know your opponent is online and has 1/2 a clue. You are done unless you can overwhelm him/her, so they can't set up the perfect defense of each incoming attack. For that, you need a big army.

this is completey faulse, the way the game is now with it huge #s you can easily just throw a ton of troops at someone to kill them...........just overwhlelming #s.
Not exactly, numbers help, as they should, but they don't win (or at least not easily, and at a high high price) against a good strategic defender. There is no attack there is no counter for

Or the smart, online defender, will play possum. send one of each troop type from another town, or set up the barracks to pop out one if each
troops type out, 5 seconds before the hit. And have a trap or abatis pop out just before the hit. The defender losses like 6 troops, the 100k archer eat the horse meat for dinner.

Limiting or scaling back troops is a stupid concept that only the weak agree with. If you want to be good on a well developed server, then large armies are just apart of the game.

Even though its just a game, people spend a lot of time, effort, and money making their accounts the best they can be. Just because casual players cannot or choose not to spend as much time, effort, or money as the top players, doesn't mean the game should be changed.

Life isn't fair and neither is this game, so if you want to be playing on a mostly even field, my suggestion would be to start on a new server every 2-3 months where the armies aren't that huge yet.

While I don't completely agree with limiting troops, we could look at an alternative means of troop limitation without ruinning the game, if not for this game maybe for future evony game .
Evony could utilizing what is already being used with wall defense, as in wall points that is deducted by the different type of structure being built, instead of traps and such, replace that with different type of troops that consume different amount of population points (let's call this population point for name sake).

    How population point works?

Let's assume the base population point is 1,000,000 ( this is just for figure sake) for the lowest rank and title for all players. You can recruit as many troops of varies type within the limit of said population points.

[Let's not stop there. let's also add a slight increase base on ranks and title.]

As your title and rank increases, so should your population points.
Also a purchase option to increase population for a week, a bonus for evony and players alike.

Keep in mind this is just an idea, preferably for future evony game.

sorry, this would just lead to turtle'ing still bc if you are capped at say 1,000,000 troops, everyone will keep 1million catapults and some layers, and everyone will be able to beat catapult attacks with mixed cav smacks. + evony stands to gain much more money (teleports, truce, etc) by having more activity (no troop cap)

what evony should be concentrating instead of this idea is basics, such as putting COMMA'S in their NUMBERS. or periods or some other distinguishing mark since the world uses separate punctuation.

Ofcourse it wont be an instant troop thing that you use up the population point right of the back.

This pop limitation won't be an ideal for age 1, but might be for future evony series.

While I agree that evony stands to gain, but no idea will be added unless the developers stand to gain no matter how good of an idea it is.

With ages 1 there are many ways to get food which i wont mention here without upsetting a few friends.

    I give you an example:
I was working part-time, then unemployed and back, so I was able to sustain an average of negative 110 million food consumption per hour, now thats from 4 waves of farming per day and most cities have 3 farming waves. this is just from striaght farming, resources I gather myself.

now if you add in all those other trick such as structured system where farmers support heavy players, which can further increase their total food concsumption to -150 to possibly even higher now that is insane, add the vesta that allows double that, than serious problem. The troops is only limited by the food and resources you can gather. With vesta, money players has a huge advantage limited only by ther funds.

With this p/p as describe, every players with the same title and rank should have roughly the same amount of troops, and maybe a slight boost for others with a purchase of population boost. With this, the battle strategies start with how well you use your points, much the same with how effective you use the different type of wall defense to maximize its defensive effeciency.

This is not a perfect idea as i just tought of it today, alot of tweaking and such, however, with many of the players here today with alot of experience, could contribute to perfect such an idea, even if not for age 1.

Best way to stop massive armies is to stop playing.

This makes no sense. It will still be the same, just in smaller version. Then, since there is no cap, the bigger guy will just get bigger and bigger and be even more overwhelming to the smaller guy.

Why place a cap or limit it at all? If people want bigger armies, then they pay the price with having to feed them. What you can feed is your limit. If you go beyond that, then you risk suffering refuge and lose troops. That is enough of a cap. People enjoy building their armies. They like seeing the big numbers like people like seeing themselves at higher prestige numbers and their heroes at higher attack levels. People put a lot of time and effort and even money to get what they have. They should be allowed to have it.

The point of a cap is to create a point at which the game can be balanced at. If there is no cap, there is no way to effectively balance the game which is the problem with this game: there is no balance. Balance is established at a hard cap, not a soft cap, which, in this game, constantly goes up meaning there seems to be no cap at all, or it hasn't been reached yet. Other games I've played that had existing hard caps (level cap) had some semblence of balance, this one has no hard cap on the troops and has little to no semblence of balance and runs more akin to an out of control train threatening to derail itself all so someone can claim that they should be allowed to build as massive an army "because they can feed them".

Open-ended arms races are not good for either gaming environments or in the real world.
