Semicolons rule; grammarians shudder.

Think of this punctuation mark as your friend; it is at once the shortest conjunction and the wink of a , an attenuated comma and a periodic pileup. Semicolons are underused; they could hardly be otherwise.

And yet, as brevity is the soul of wit, the semicolon is its antithesis; brevity, by definition, cannot be found in a run-on sentence. As such, tl;dr, while an appropriate use of the mark, can hardly be seen to be an intellectual advance in a conversation.
