What you mentioned about AGe II also applies to Age 1.
The key is not troop numbers but actual damage total. Against an NPC 10, there is a minimum number of rounds that the battle can last, since the Archers have to march across the field and then take out the AT and walls. Right now, I've gotten 10 rounds.
So hero attack plays a role, just as important if not more important than total number of troops. To some extent, one can substitute more troops for a decreased hero attack, and since we can trade out att for int equipment, it is possible to send a 200k stack from a 16, and then gradually decrease the attack value of the hero to find the minimum attack value for that. Based on what I've attacked this morning, that ideal point is going to be between 150-200 attack for 193k archers.
Since you have to absorb 2 shots from the AT before you can clear them, it is possible to raise the life of your units through the hero INT value and thus reduce losses.
