If they wanted to fix ballista and archers, instead of moving forward, how about each round consumes an amount of lumber and iron consistent with projectiles being fired. Kills two birds with one stone (stops the abuse and mirrors reality where no idiot would move into range of an inferior army.)
Just my thoughts.
WEll who lost more lives. On a simple balance sheet Iraq and Afhganistan together still have had less casulties then the average day in Vietnam. Vietnam had less casualties then some single battles in WWI or WWII.
IS bombing from a B52 at 35000 feet with JDAM weapons the way of the great knights no. BEcuase they didnt have B52's and JDAM weapons.
THough shorter range does increase accuracy the vast majority of tacticians will tell you that if you can fire from range and inflict casulties on your enemy whiletaking none in return your a fool not to.
BUT EVONY IS NOT THE REAL WORLD as folks have pointed out at several occasions.
There are only Four boxes to use in defense of Democracry Ballot, Jury, Soap, And Ammo. Use in that order.
For nigh 300 years we stood masses of troops with rifles in pure block formations against each other fired calmly at each other front line first, then front line would get on one knee and second line would fire... Each force ~200 feet apart... Shot ripping limbs off people standing next to you... The psychological damage to those who fought in such wars was insane... Reading american civil war compilitatiosn will explain that one far better than me... Or even United States Revolutionary War...
I'd take war before or after this block of history... by WW1 we limited our weapons of war (though gas attacks and flame throwers were still in use at that point and both were horrifying weapons)... I'd rather take the chances back in ancient times in say... the roman legion... Though being infantry still rahter sucked... cavalry and archers were better palces to stay... infantry death rates were extreme (the rates varied, but 'acceptable losses' of infantry were usually 40% or greater)...

Is your life the same? Do ghosts cry tears? Do they feel years?

rifling (which is hwere the term 'rifle' comes form) was invented in the 16th century... Though tehcnically the muskets were more of the style of the revoluntionary war era, I just got tired of seperating them from the later rifles by writing 'Rifles/Muskets' as I did earlier... The practical differences were rather small for most of that period...
A few people made good use of rifling though when they created 'long rifles' (Davy Crockett is a good name to look up on that concept)...
