check out that software. But, as far as the firmware update... Dunno what to tell ya. I don't have any iDevices. Nor do I use a YouTube converter.
m4a isn't a proprietary format... just doesn't work with Windoze I believe.... ah wait, doesn't that make it proprietary???!?!?OP by Rota thread post #8
My iTunes wants to turn everything into ".m4a"
... whatever that is.It doesn't play in any other player I have used.
But, not proprietary to iTunes. Many other music players for Mac at least can play it.
EDIT: I believe, Rota, when you insert an audio CD to import into iTunes it has the setting that asks what format to store it in. Choose AAC for iPod format.
ALSO, there is the option to create an AAC version of the files. On the mac, Menubar > Advanced > Create AAC Version
For Windoooze, i dunno where that option is hidden. So, if you have to do dirty work to make the music all work, create the AAC version and delete the old.
If it was a mac, you could also restart, hold Command-S and wait til the black screen of Unix goodness comes up, then at the prompt (#), type /sbin/fsck -fy ...
fsck stands for File System ChecK .... it will either at the end display the Volume <YOURVOLUMENAMEHERE> appears to be okay, if so, type reboot at the prompt. Or, you may get a message saying ***FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED***... if that happens, run fsck again.
As for the Windooooze OS, idk what you can do besiiiiiiiiiiides, run checkdisk. Don't run Disk Defrag, you may end up with the files moved and a messed up iTunes library folder.
ANOTHER EDIT: If you have to go back to 3.1.2 of iOS, you can, plug in your iPod in via your PC's USB port. Go to the device's menu. Then, select the option restore. That will restore it to factory, you can then update it as far as you want to.

It doesn't play in any other player I have used.
