check out that software. But, as far as the firmware update... Dunno what to tell ya. I don't have any iDevices. Nor do I use a YouTube converter.

OP by Rota thread post #8
My iTunes wants to turn everything into ".m4a"
... whatever that is. It doesn't play in any other player I have used.
m4a isn't a proprietary format... just doesn't work with Windoze I believe.... ah wait, doesn't that make it proprietary???!?!?
But, not proprietary to iTunes. Many other music players for Mac at least can play it.
EDIT: I believe, Rota, when you insert an audio CD to import into iTunes it has the setting that asks what format to store it in. Choose AAC for iPod format.
ALSO, there is the option to create an AAC version of the files. On the mac, Menubar > Advanced > Create AAC Version
For Windoooze, i dunno where that option is hidden. So, if you have to do dirty work to make the music all work, create the AAC version and delete the old.
If it was a mac, you could also restart, hold Command-S and wait til the black screen of Unix goodness comes up, then at the prompt (#), type /sbin/fsck -fy ...
fsck stands for File System ChecK .... it will either at the end display the Volume <YOURVOLUMENAMEHERE> appears to be okay, if so, type reboot at the prompt. Or, you may get a message saying ***FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED***... if that happens, run fsck again.

As for the Windooooze OS, idk what you can do besiiiiiiiiiiides, run checkdisk. Don't run Disk Defrag, you may end up with the files moved and a messed up iTunes library folder.

ANOTHER EDIT: If you have to go back to 3.1.2 of iOS, you can, plug in your iPod in via your PC's USB port. Go to the device's menu. Then, select the option restore. That will restore it to factory, you can then update it as far as you want to.

And m4a is yet another audio filetype.

It's not the downloads I'm worried about. It's the WiFi at this point. I can get music from lots of other places. I use the WiFi function a lot on my iPod, and this is extremely annoying.

Just bought my iPod about 4 months ago. So no, that's not really an option.

Tried it. Didn't work. It stayed on iOS 4.1. I even tried using the back up file from my sister's iPod, which is still iOS 3.1.2, and using that to restore it. None of it worked. That was the first thing I tried. The only way to do it is downloading the software from an online source which also didn't work.

AAC is a better format, and is the reason why it's supposed to be MP3's successor. Bit-for-bit, you get a better sound from AAC / AAC+ encoded audio than you do MP3.

I too don't dink with iWhatever stuff, but there should be a codec out there somewhere that plays it on a Windows system.

Anyway, the primary focus at the moment seems to be the WiFi aspect. I've given some advice privately, which up to this point I've determined that the iPod can see the wireless router, but what I'm not sure about is if the two devices are utilizing the same security protocol after the update. If the router was using WEP and the update to the iPod switched the default mode to be WPA, then the two devices wouldn't be able to talk...

That's fine... then everything needs start using the AAC+ format. But crap like this .m4a just needs to die.

A little consistency is not too much for a consumer to request. We don't need a half dozen formats for music That some players MIGHT play, and some players might not.
