I don't play basketball, so I can't really comment on that aspect of the original post, however, in every game I have ever played, the primary reason that I've witnessed for groups to merge is to create the dominance you are cautioning against.
It's unfortunate, but seems to be the nature of the beast to want to be able to "own" on whatever playing field you are on.
When winning the competition becomes the only reason you play, it's time to find a new game.
I have not been playing Evony very long, I started so that I could help revamp and revitalize The Evony Wiki, and I was lucky to find a nice group of people to ally with who were willing to protect me while I was weak (which I still am), and answer all my stupid noob questions, but otherwise allow me to just play the game to gather the information I needed. I wish there were more like them![]()
I sort of have experience with alliance mergers. A month or so ago, my alliance was ranked around 20, with a couple sister alliances, ranked 10ish (soon betrayed us) and 25ish. We were at war with 3 of the top 5 alliance from a long past server merge. We apparently merged with the rank 25 alliance to increase our power and numbers, but it failed quickly. We literally merged, and unmerged back to our alliances before I even logged on. So yeah, they can fail quickly. We also recently merged with the rank 5ish alliance, to get more help fighting the big guys, and has been working fine so far.
I think server merges don't create a group of friendly alliances, since most are trying to make people from their respective servers on top again, which has created a rivalry between the alliances for us.
But I digress, in the end, it is true that people should stop "farmville" (which I do not think we, SS31 have a problem with) and do more fighting. Much more enjoyable to use troops on enemies instead of b10's.
Yeah? Then you must like playing sports against little kids. Better yet, babies. You can totally dominate. No challenges.
How would yo ulike to game on a server where everyone player only had 1 warrior in each city, but everyone in your alliance had millions of troops? Super easy, right? You can like totally dominate!!! Awesome!!
People like you want to dominate because you are scared of challenges.
Thanks to Boleslav for the Afro Samurai Signature series.
I have made a few video guides that may help you.

If the little kid wants to jump in with the adults, then sure, they'll be treated like the rest of the adults.
Yup, I'm pretty much scared of challenges. Good thing your city doesn't have 2 warriors or I'd run the other way. But as long as you only have the one warrior, I'm going to kill it and take your resources.
no he wants to dominate cause he's good at it. because he's a good player and other good players learn from him. It's those who arent willing to learn from others that are better then them that get whipped by people like Fel and his biggunswell those people and anyone with resources.

Plenty of small alliances on our server go under the radar and they are able to grow and thrive. The focus of a top alliance is typically top 10 - 20 ranked alliances with bad attitudes and red flags. There's enough meat out on the battlefield to shred without trying to host recess on the playground after nap time. And when those alliances fall, the ones that were given time to grow will be ripe for picking.
I would say that this is less like basketball and more like wrestling. It's a soap opera + fighting. There are good guys and bad guys. Grudges and egos. Challenges. Drama. Wailing and gnashing of teeth. Farts. It's more complex than two teams on a field trying to grab each others' balls.
