Guide intended for players starting out for the first time on AgeI and covers, hopefully, all the aspects
Q: Why farm NPC's?
A: A level5 NPC hit will give you 3M food and 450k gold with every hit, it is possible to hit as many as 20 twice a day, or even more if are a dedicated player with lots of spare time at work
The Basics:
To start farming NPC you need Ballistae, 20 of them for level one. And enough transports to carry the resources back. To make Ballistae you need a lvl9 Barracks... go upgrade one NOW!!!
You can scout npc using one scout. Add up all the resources and see how many transports you are going to need.
NPC's will regenerate resources to full capacity every 8 hours and after every server refresh.
For level 1/2/3 research does not matter, if you are able to build ballistae you already have sufficient research
NPC1 = 20 ballistae
NPC2 = 50 ballistae
NPC3 = 170 ballistae
NPC4 = I skipped this one, sorry I dont know.
NPC5 = 550 ballistae (RESEARCH LEVELS!)
Won a Mech's on 155 and tried a lvl3 with Arch5:
NPC3 - Arch5 / MT4 / HBR0 / ATT69 (160Bal, 0 losses, 91 rounds)
Always send you best attack hero to do the job.
You can safely attack NPC1/2/3 with any research levels
Tech Levels:
To sucesfully hit NPC5 you are going to need Archery8 and Horeseback Riding (HBR)5/6
Do not upgrade HBR beyond that, for some strange reason you can do it with arch8 and hbr6, but not with arch8 hbr7.

Building NPC's to Farm:
To build NPC you need an open city slot... bite the bullet and abandon your second, you will be pleased you have done so.
To make NPC you build a town on a flat and then abandon it, if you want to you can first build a rally spot and then return you workers and resources to your main.
Remember to recall your archers before the new town is completed.
The NPC wil have the same level as the level of flat it was built on.
Flats go up one level every day during the server refresh, all lvl10 flats go to lvl1. EDIT: (Occupied flats do not go up by a level)
We are eventually going to farm only lvl5's so reserve the flats closest to you for NPC5.You might want to save one flat less than 2 miles for a lvl10 NPC. (Hardcore players will have more, if you are up to the challenge keep more flats open for NPC10)
Build a few lvl1/2/3 NPC's more than 5 miles away from you and farm them so long to make resources to build more ballistae. (On the new servers they clear low level NPC's after a few weeks, so building more of them a bit closer is a feasable option)
Turn as many as possible flats to NPC'5 daily, if you skip a day those flats are worthless to you for the next 9 days.
To attack flats I use:
lvl1: 100Warr
lvl2: 200Warr
lvl3: 300Arch + 1 of each foot soldier
lvl5: 1kArch + 1 of each foot soldier
(For hitting lvl5 flats I now use 1500warrior and one of each footsoldier, much more cost effective, you lose between 100 and 500 warrior)
Examples:
You can farm NPC5 with:
Arch8 and HBR5/6
Arch9 and HBR8/9/10
Arch10 and HBR6/7/8/9/10
How many ballistae do I send to an NPC5?
The straightforward answer is 550, but with a good attack hero you can greatly reduce numbers,
these are some of my personal farming experiments on server 90 and 130.
*I used this guide on 145 and it worked 100%
(EDIT) The MT doesnt matter much, if at all.
Here is an example of how the reports are layed out.
No buffs were ever used.
NPC Level : 5
Archery : 8
Millitary Tradition : 8
Horseback Riding : 5
Hero Attack : 77
470 Ballistae
Fight lasted 76 rounds
Hero Attack : 92
Losses 0
Or in short:
NPC5 - Arch8 / MT8 / HBR 5 / ATT77 (470Bal, 76 rounds, 0 losses)
OK, I decreased the number of Ballista with each attack, and started encountering losses at 390. (I had 0 losses with 410 and attack hero 35)
NPC5 - Arch8 / MT8 / HBR 5 / ATT35 (410Bal, 81 rounds, 0 losses)
NPC5 - Arch8 / MT8 / HBR 5 / ATT35 (390Bal, 100 rounds, 89 losses)
Please note the hero attack, going to try again with a higher attack hero. The fight also clipped the 100 round barrier.
So hero attack really does help alot!
NPC5 - Arch8 / MT8 / HBR 5 / ATT35 (390Bal, 100 rounds, 89 losses)
NPC5 - Arch8 / MT8 / HBR 5 / ATT68 (390Bal, 77 rounds, 0 losses)
I got it down to 380 with 68 attack
NPC5 - Arch8 / MT8 / HBR 5 / ATT35 (410Bal, 81 rounds, 0 losses)
NPC5 - Arch8 / MT8 / HBR 5 / ATT68 (380Bal, 80 rounds, 0 losses)
Look at how the wrong HBR/ARCH combonation affects the outcome
NPC5 - Arch8 / MT8 / HBR 5 / ATT102 (380Bal, 0 losses)
NPC5 - Arch9 / MT8 / HBR 5 / ATT102 (380Bal, 47 losses, 79 rounds)
NPC5 - Arch9 / MT8 / HBR 5 / ATT102 (590Bal, 37 losses, 61 rounds)
When completing Arch9, stop hitting NPC and get HBR up
NPC5 - Arch9 / MT8 / HBR7 / ATT109 (600Bal, 47 losses, 56 rounds)
At HBR8 we are back in business
NPC5 - Arch9 / MT8 / HBR8 / ATT80 (400Bal, 0 losses, 72 rounds)
Minimum Number of Ballistae With Attack Hero:
Please note that the defending hero plays a roll in the outcome.
I haven't logged my farms on 5's until now but I have consistently had 0 losses with 420 Ballistae and attack hero's of 80+ (Arch8/HBR6)
Im playing 154 ATM and adding some hits with HBR5
NPC5 - Arch8 / MT4 / HBR5 / ATT88 (460Bal, 0 losses, 68 rounds)
NPC5 - Arch8 / MT4 / HBR5 / ATT91 (460Bal, 0 losses, 66 rounds)
NPC5 - Arch8 / MT4 / HBR5 / ATT93 (400Bal, 0 losses, 74 rounds)
NPC5 - Arch8 / MT4 / HBR5 / ATT93 (400Bal, 0 losses, 74 rounds)
Here are some farms on 148:

NPC5 - Arch9 / MT8 / HBR8 / ATT123 (350Bal, 0 losses, 68 rounds)
*** Tech Levels
Eventually when you want to go to Arch9 you will have to upgrade your HBR to lvl8 along with it, the safe level HBR for Arch9 is HBR8.
Once your Archery is 9 and your HBR is 8 you can upgrade as you please it wont affect your ability to farm NPC5 lossless.
Comments/suggestions/spelling/grammar/punctuation welcome.
