It was (and remains) seriously broken and there were armies in circulation which are in orders of magnitude larger than they suspected would be possible.
They were indefensible against and any two bit chump could create them by following a guide. It wasn't the best players at the top - it was just those who took greatest advantage of the blatant faulty mechanics and followed the guides. Sound gameplay was worthless.
To fix this:
Step 1) Cutoff the limitless resources.
Step 2) Provide a major defensive boost to counter the huge armies and allow people to survive whilst these are worked out of circulation.
Step 3) Start tweaking the attacking back up to a balanced state.
It's only been a few days of the boot being on the other foot and defense being overpowered and look at the noise. Up until then it wasn't possible to defend and a simple game mechanic fault was unstoppable.
A lot of really immature and quite frankly sub par players were getting off on power trip. This tap was turned off and the tantrums we see across the boards are testament to this.
The truly good players will continue to move ahead and adapt as the game continues to evolve. Some of them are even managing to feed their bloated armies still...
