I believe that the name of the butterfly effect simply took its name from the idea that a butterfly's wing could cause a tornado elsewhere. Perhaps a butterfly's wings might start a snowball effect, but I sincerely doubt it.

But as to the idea that changing one small variable to get a monumentally different outcome, I believe in that.

For example, look at coding; if you make the tiniest mistake, and don't notice it, you'll code over and over and over, eventually giving you something bizzarely different from what would have without that mistake.

Another example, look at history; if you could travel back in time, to any event, and simply erase one person's existence, say for example, Rasputin, how would it affect any events that person was around for? How would it affect future events?

If you say "God" is the more likely explanation, then I will lol.

But I would like to hear the people's explanation of how they believe in it only to a certain extent.. What does that mean?
Actually, its more like cause and effect on a grand scale. When you look at it from the ways that it can work, as opposed to the ways that it can't, its not nearly as foolish. Just like flight.
