    Default Realistic or ''Virtualistic''?

    I'm just wondering.

Do players want games like Evony to head towards a realistic fashion?
Where the game should strive to be as-near to if not almost similar to real-world conditions.
    (eg. Real-world unpredictability. Real-world anomalies. Real-world limitations.)

Or should the direction instead be heading towards a ''virtualistic'' one?
Where everything and anything can be calculated and predicted using formulaes to even reach exact precisions; game exploits are acceptable and should be embraced as part of the game, not a liability.
(eg. Big armies will always defeat small armies. We can always have armies with 400,000 ballistae in them that can tear down ANY city.)

P.S My examples may not be the best ones; they may even be flawed in any case. Perhaps if anyone has better examples to characterise the Realisitc and Virtual aspect of games, do feel free.

My personal view is that games should always strive to be as real-world as possible. But I'd always like to hear what others have to comment and hear other opinions.

As always. Please do be kind and gracious to others in ur retorts and disagreements.

I've already said, alot of the problems can be cured by the restart button.

The game either by design or evolution allows you to exterminate other players. The problem is, we tend to have loyalties to the people we associate with. So I'm on server 3 in Thuringia as an example. That's where my alliance is. I get slaughtered by a ruthless player, I am sitting in a small farm town looking at the NPC towns that used to be my Forts. Restart. Or? Quit. Go to another server, try and get ahead of the next guy but your mates are still back on 3.

There are sploits in unrestricted restarts too though. They need a cooldown on it.

-Add On: I know why the restart button is disabled too. They needed us to get to this point. They needed to see where it would go. They needed to confirm that power grinders would end up with 500,000 Ballista and be unstoppable by any other force but Lagg.

I assume when they are done observing the end game sceanarios we will in fact get a working restart button. It's core to this kind of game.

It would be awesome for this game to go towards a realistic fashion, but I think there is a level of impossibility with that.

First and foremost, this is kind of a limited platform for realism. I think it would take something on an MMO level to offer realism, because the world is
    persistent.

On a second level any online game is meant to keep the gameplay flowing, to keep the player going, and therefore realism is traded for certain rules. Such things as regenerating walls, not being able to lose your last city, etc.

I know a set of things that could be added for realism though. One is variables. There could be disease outbreaks, violent storms, and also bountiful harvests. There could be roaming packs of bandits.

One thing that would not be so cool about realism- building/researching/training times. You could say goodbye to minutes or even hours and say hello to days or months. I could probably mention more unenjoyable factors of a "realistic" gameplay, but I doubt I need to.

I don't think I would aim for precise realism; I don't think most games are capable of reliably being "realistic". There's just way too many factors and simulations that would have to be taken into consideration, depending on how extreme you're wanting to go.

I guess you could say I lean towards "virtualistic", it just seems best suited for a game of this nature especially. But I would rather prefer one that falls into the category of "virtualistic but reasonable", which in my views is different from the example you provided (I dislike precise linear calculations in games, I enjoy some degree of random factor. And I prefer a balanced game, to me "exploits" or "cheats" dilute the challenge and sense of accomplishment an otherwise balanced game can offer).

Realism can be a nice addition to a game, but only so long as the elements in question actually add to the fun of the game, rather than simply reflect realism.

    It's all Rodri's fault.

I just want it to be playable, and for the entire mechanics of the game to stop changing every week.
U noć idem, sjećanje jedan trn od zalosne, dalje prema smrti.
Into the night I go, memory a thorn of sorrow, onward toward death.

    So, drifting through the dark
The sympathy of night's mercy inside my heart
Is your life the same? Do ghosts cry tears? Do they feel years?
